Mike Smith has been appointed Managing Director of IBM New Zealand, taking over from Rob Lee who moves into another role with the company.

As reported exclusively by sister publication CIO New Zealand, the current General Manager of Cloud and Sourcing at Spark Digital will assume responsibilities of Big Blue by the end of the calendar year.

Having previously ran the vendor’s South Island and Strategy Alliances divisions during a seven-year stint in the 1990s, Smith rejoins the company with a wealth of local technology experience.

Following C-level and Director roles at UXC Oxygen, Revera, CCL, Jade Software and Future Technologies Limited, Smith joined Spark Digital in February 2015, and is also Chair of the Advisory Board for Lexel Systems.

With no clarification yet on Lee’s new role within the company, the tech veteran will continue his long-standing affinity with the tech giant, drawing on over 25 years of experience at the vendor.

Based in Auckland, Lee was appointed to the Managing Director role in May 2013, after leading IBM's Westpac Integrated Account, which was formed in April 2008.

Prior to this, Lee’s role was within IBM Global Technology Services as the Director, Financial Services Sector for Australia and New Zealand.

The reshuffle follows a dramatic 24 hours for the New Zealand channel, with Keith Watson revealing plans to vacate his role as Managing Director of Hewlett Packard Enterprise on November 1.
