Dick Smith stores cease trading on April 30

Final date has been set

Receivers of failed retailer, Dick Smith, have penned April 30 as the final day of closure for the retailer’s extensive number of bricks and mortar stores.

A couple of stores have already ceased trading such as Mornington in Victoria (March 18) and Whyalla in South Australia (March 22).

A further 35 stores have been notified of their exact closure date. Outlets in Tamworth, Hurstville and Lake Haven in NSW and Glenwood, Thames, Invercargill, Alexandra, Orewa, Masterson and Levin in New Zealand will close on April 9.

The following outlets will close on April 16 - Penrith, Rhodes, Campbelltown, Carnes Hills, Winston Hills, Rockdale, Marrickville Wollongong in NSW; Toowoomba and Airlie Beach in Queensland; Glenelg, North Park, Golden Grove and Mount Barker in South Australia; Kingston in Tasmania; and Wendouree, Mildura, Sale, Cannington, Riverton and Carousel in Victoria.

Receivers, Ferrier Hodgson, said in a statement that where possible, affected staff will be redeployed to nearby Dick Smith stores while others will receive redundancy notices if redeployment isn’t possible.

Employees will only be given notice of termination once the exact date of their store closure is known.

“We would like to thank the Dick Smith employees for their support during the controlled closure process. This is a difficult and uncertain time for them and we have really appreciated their commitment,” Receiver, James Stewart, said.

Online retailer Kogan.com purchased Dick Smith's online retail business, and will take over from June 1.

Kogan plans to keep the legacy of the Dick Smith brand and run it as an online-only consumer electronics retailer.

Despite a significant amount of interest, the receivers failed to find a buyer for the 363 Dick Smith outlets that are closing down across A/NZ, impacting close to 3000 employees.

In January, receivers announced that 27 David Jones Electronics Powered by Dick Smith concession stores would close. In early March, Move Airport stores located at Sydney International Airport were also shut down.
