Watch: Boeing's new 737 Max has first test flight

The new airliner is scheduled to be delivered in 2017, 50 years after the Boeing 737 debuted

Boeing's newest airliner, the 737 Max, successfully completed its first test flight on Friday.

It took off from Renton, Washington, a little before 10 a.m. PT, and returned around 12:30 p.m. after completing loops over the Olympic Peninsula.

The aircraft features engines that are more fuel efficient, new winglets that make it more aerodynamic and an improved cockpit with fewer but larger flat screens.

The airliner is Boeing's challenge to the Airbus 320 neo and the first one is scheduled to be delivered to launch customer Southwest Airlines in 2017.
