​Apple smashes iPhone sales record to cement smartphone dominance

Apple has sold more than 13 million new iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus models, setting a new record for smartphone sales just three days after launch.

With New Zealand kickstarting the global release on September 25, the tech giant has hit the ground running in style, making a mockery of critics and naysayers as the world once again embraces the iPhone.

Despite the usual murmurings from the disgruntled competition, questioning Apple’s levels of innovation amidst a changing technological market, Cupertino has not only reported strong initial sales, but a wealth of positive feedback for the new devices.

The records are widely expected to keep tumbling however with the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus available in more than 40 additional countries beginning October 9 including Italy, Mexico, Russia, Spain and Taiwan, and available in over 130 countries by the end of the year.

“Sales for iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus have been phenomenal, blowing past any previous first weekend sales results in Apple’s history,” says Tim Cook, CEO, Apple.

“Customers’ feedback is incredible and they are loving 3D Touch and Live Photos, and we can’t wait to bring iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus to customers in even more countries on October 9.”

In New Zealand, the new iPhones are available through Vodafone, Spark, 2degrees and additional carriers, as well as select Apple Authorised Resellers.

According to Cook, sales completed by September 26 will be included in Apple’s 2015 fourth fiscal quarter results, and sales completed on September 27 will be included in Apple’s 2016 first fiscal quarter results.
