​Vodafone New Zealand adds Arbor Cloud to combat DDoS extortion

Vodafone New Zealand has added Arbor Cloud to its suite of security services, providing multi-layered protection for its infrastructure and that of its enterprise customers against DDoS attacks.

“We’ve seen a significant rise in the size of DDoS attacks in this country in recent months,” says Ken Tunnicliffe, Enterprise Director, Vodafone New Zealand.

“The Internet of Things is changing the security landscape by increasing the number of touch-points available to attackers.

“New Zealand’s size and finite internet bandwidth mean attackers can launch large-scale DDoS attacks with relative ease through techniques such as reflection and amplification, so our customers need to be confident their network and data are secure and protected.”

With the addition of Arbor Cloud to Vodafone’s protection portfolio, the telco now has over 1Tbps of cleaning capacity and can stop large-scale DDoS attacks by cleaning the traffic offshore before it has a chance to attack our infrastructure.

“Our statistics have shown a rise in the size of the peak attack over the last four successive quarters - reaching over 28Gbps in April-June 2015,” adds Nick Race, Country Manager, Arbor Networks New Zealand.

“The DDoS problem is not going away; it’s actually worsening over time.

“Vodafone has been a long-time Arbor Networks customer and Arbor Cloud is an excellent complement to its existing Peakflow deployment, keeping its infrastructure and that of its customers fully protected from the full spectrum of DDoS attacks today.”

Race says the Arbor Cloud solution enables ISPs to quickly scale existing - or in some cases launch new - DDoS protection services.

“It’s a global volumetric DDoS cleaning service operating in numerous locations throughout the world and provides over 1 Tbps of cleaning capacity, which is greater than any DDoS attack seen to date,” Race adds.

In the event of an attack, Vodafone can divert the offending traffic into Arbor Cloud before it even hits this country to have it cleaned, passing only the clean traffic onto New Zealand.

“Vodafone has built a close partnership with Arbor Networks over the past years, one which is built on trust and the knowledge they bring as the global expert in DDoS mitigation,” Tunnicliffe adds.

“Arbor’s rapid response, sound technical expertise and defence capabilities ensure our customers’ online resources can be protected.”
