Record broken: iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus sales top 10 million in opening weekend

Another year, another record breaking debut for the latest iPhone. Apple has announced it sold ten million iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus models combined after the first weekend of availability--a new record for launch weekend iPhone sales. It's no surprise, after Apple announced that iPhone 6 and 6 Plus pre-orders hit 4 million in the first 24 hours alone.

The latest iPhones became available on Friday, September 19, in 10 countries and territories worldwide.

Apple's latest sales record beats the company's 2013 iPhone launch weekend for the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c, which topped out at nine million devices.

However, the iPhone 5s and 5c were available in 11 regions worldwide including the US, Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Puerto Rico, Singapore and the UK. For this year's launch weekend, China was left off the initial launch list.

Sales were big for the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, but the wait may be even bigger for those who didn't pre-order an iPhone 6 Plus. Verizon, for example, was already predicting a delivery date of October 24 for 6 Pluses ordered on Friday. At this writing, Apple's online store was quoting a three to four week wait time for a gold, contract-free 16GB iPhone 6 Plus on T-Mobile.

With larger, higher-resolution screens than their predecessors, an even thinner build, and a new version of iOS promising deep integration with Mac OS X Yosemite, there's a lot to love about the new iPhones.

The iPhone 6 packs a 4.7-inch display, while the iPhone 6 Plus sports a 5.5-inch screen. Both devices run iOS 8 with features such as the new Health app, iCloud Drive integration, third-party keyboard support, and Family Sharing.
