Baidu picks Schneider Electric's datacentres-in-boxes

Containerised modules to make up Baidu M1 datacentre

Schneider Electric has won a contract to build a containerised datacentre for Chinese search engine, Baidu, based on a series of datacentre-in-a-box units.

Baidu M1, as it will be named, will serve a data management role as the main production datacentre as part of the search engines “green Baidu” aspirations; it will handle the billions of search and analysis requests received by the company daily.

The container is being built to Baidu’s guidelines of eco-friendliness, fast deployment, low input, and high capability operation.

Schneider Electric has thus far designed and manufactured two prefabricated modules of the M1 datacentre with solutions such as in-row air conditioning and integrated DCIM software, as well as IT cabinets, UPS, cable management, fire suppression and access security.

Each module is built with insulated wall panels which the vendor claims are weather proof, high secure, and designed for any environment.

Included in each datacentre-in-a-box is Schneider Electric’s data management software.

Schneider Electric senior vice-president, Chenhong Huang, said the construction of Baidu M1 is key to meeting customer trends as the requirement for speed, cost control, and performance in data management continues its upward spiral.

This contract is the latest in the growing partnership between Schneider Electric and Baidu. The vendor previously provided IT cabinets and UPS for Baidu’s Yangquan datacentre, and has also been a tailored cabinet vendor for Baidu’s Scorpio Plan.

The two parties intend to continue exploring future contract options on the back of the opportunity presented by Cloud computing and Big Data.
