The new iTunes Pass feature lets users deposit funds in their iTunes or App Store accounts while visiting Apple Stores in Japan.

Apple debuted an account recharging service called iTunes Pass at its stores in Japan on Tuesday.

The feature allows users with iPhones or other iOS devices to add funds to their iTunes Store or App Store accounts at the electronics giant's eight outlets in the country.

Users can skip redemption codes with iTunes Pass, as it lets them use the Passbook application to add credit to accounts.

The iTunes Pass displays a QR code that store employees scan to process payment.

"When you open iTunes Pass inside Passbook, a store specialist will scan it and accept payment," Apple Japan wrote on its website. "The balance is updated on the spot and can be used immediately."

A staffer at an Apple Store in Tokyo confirmed the service was available from Tuesday. It's unclear whether the service will be launched overseas as well.

Apple Japan did not immediately respond to a request for more information.

Launched in 2012, Passbook is designed to digitize the many papers and plastic cards that users carry around in their wallets.
