Apple’s rumoured iPhone 6 sapphire display stabbed with knife to little effect

The next-generation iPhone could be the first to do without Corning Gorilla Glass

Apple’s rumoured iPhone 6 display can withstand stabbings and other assaults to little effect based on a video leak by online personality Marques Brownlee.

Brownlee claims to have sourced a production model from Sonnydickson.com of the next iPhone’s glass screen. Based on the production part, Apple’s next iPhone will ditch Corning Gorilla glass screens for one made from sapphire crystal, which is currently used on the iPhone 5S’ camera and home button.

“Sapphire is an extremely high quality material and it is really durable,” Brownlee said, adding the new screen is “literally the same thickness as a piece of paper”.

He then begins to test its durability by bending it and incorporating some props. “I broke out the knife and I broke out the keys. I went on to basically stab the thing pretty hard right in the middle and dragged the point of the knife around the surface with some serious pressure. I got no result. Clearly you don’t need a screen protector here.”

The existence of the sapphire display supports the notion Apple will release a 4.7-inch version of its iPhone, said Brownlee.
