Telecom gets naked with 30Mbps and 100Mbps fibre

Standalone plans priced from $75 per month, with mobile bundles available

Telecom has launched its Naked Ultra Fibre service at two price points, giving customers the choice of either 30 megabit per second (Mbps) or 100Mbps download speeds.

The telecommunications provider’s Fibre 30 plans (30Mbps downloads and 10Mbps uploads) are priced from $75 per month for an 80 gigabyte (GB) quota; a 150GB allowance costs $89, while the unlimited service is charged at $99.

The Fibre 100 plans (100Mbps down, 50 up) are available with identical limits, and are priced $105, $119, and $129, respectively.

There is currently no way to browse the plans on Telecom’s Web site without first inputting an address at which fibre is available. Telecom has told Reseller that it intends to strip the restriction from the Web site.

Telecom’s Naked Ultra Fibre is available at all locations in which wired fibre is live.

Customers can sign up to the standalone services, or bundle it with a Telecom Ultra Mobile to qualify for a discounted rate. Doing so reduces the price of the Ultra Fibre Naked contract by $20 per month.

Telecom home, mobile and business general manager, Jason Paris, said the introduction of naked fibre is the “logical next step” following the claimed success of the telecommunications provider’s naked broadband product which was launched late 2013.

Paris also said the launch coincides with the trend towards mobile services and away from traditional landline connections despite that the latter is still owned by the majority of New Zealanders.

“The landline continues to be popular of course, but a growing group of our customers tell us that the only calls they receive on their home phone are from people who are either trying to sell them something or asking about their political views,” he said.

“These customers are quite happy to stop chatting to telemarketers and political pollsters if it means they can save a few dollars each month.”
