First Android Wear smartwatches shipping now as war for your wrist winds up

Google's bid for wearable tech dominance has begun as the LG G Watch and Samsung Gear Live start shipping.

LG and Samsung have started shipping the first couple of smartwatches running Android Wear, Google's bid to get into wearable tech.

Both the Samsung Gear Live and LG G Watch are available through the Google Play Store and will ship within one or two business days. AT&T also plans to sell the G Watch starting July 11, and Best Buy will carry both smartwatches if you want to see them up close.

Samsung's Gear Live is the cheaper of the two, at $199. Its 320-by-320 resolution Super AMOLED display measures 1.63 inches, and there's a 300 mAh battery inside. The Gear Live also includes a heart rate monitor and sports some metal trim around the watch face and on the clasp.

LG's G Watch costs $229, and has a 1.65-inch, 280-by-280 resolution LCD display. It has a larger battery than Samsung's watch, at 400 mAh, and it comes in either all-black or gold trim with a white band.

Both watches have 1.2 GHz processors, 512 MB of RAM and 4 GB of internal storage, and they're both rated IP67 water and dust resistant. They also run nearly identical software, per Google's requirements, though they have different selections of watch faces.

If you're dying to try Android Wear need more help deciding between the two watches, Jon Phillips has a more in-depth comparison of the LG G Watch and Samsung Gear Live. Keep in mind, though, that Motorola's Moto 360 is coming later this summer, and while we don't know the price, its round body is clearly the best-looking of the group.
