Symantec adopts beyondblue livery for V8 Supercars

Security vendor updates the look of team as part of deal with a not-for-profit organisation

The Norton Hornets V8 Supercars team has traded its familiar yellow livery for a white one featuring butterflies.

The new livery was unveiled by Symantec at the 2014 Formula 1 Rolex Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne in time for the V8 Supercars support race.

The change in livery is a reflection of Symantec’s partnership with not-for-profit organisation beyondblue, which raises awareness about anxiety and depression.

Symantec Pacific region Norton senior director, Matthew Drake, said the partnership with beyondblue stretches back almost a year when the security vendor handed over a check for $300,000 at an event held in Bathurst.

“We’re very proud of that, not just because of the money we handed over at Bathurst, but also the awareness we’ve raised with the race team about depression and anxiety in Australia,” he said.

As for why Symantec and Norton are extending their partnership with beyondblue, Drake said it is about protecting Australian’s online and combating cyber bullying.

“Technology only goes that far and you have to partner with an organisation like beyondblue to take it to the next level,” he said.

The beyondblue livery is themed around butterflies and is only used on the number 36 Norton Nissan Altima driven by Michael Caruso, now renumbered to 300 to commemorate the $300,000 donation.

Aiming for 300

Former Victorian Premier and chairman of beyondblue, Jeff Kennett, attended the unveiling of the livery in a beyondblue themed race suit.

The unveilving comes two decades after Kennett started the process of switching the F1 event location from Adelaide to Melbourne in 1996.

beyondblue was founded 14 years ago, and in that time Kennett has seen challenges crop up with the growth and improvement of technology.

“There is a real issue with some of the social ramifications of cyber bullying and the way social networks are used,” he said.

When Symantec approached beyondblue about the partnership, Kennett said he was impressed with the vendor's focus on youths and cyber bullying.

“We were very appreciative given their work and leadership in security,” he said.

“This partnership is important to us, as beyondblue is not only going to be seen by everyone who witnesses the racing here, but all of those who watch it.”

With the help of the added exposure in V8 Supercars, Kennett said the organisation hopes to raise another $300,000 this year as well.
