Tip of The Hat: Unraveling IBM's cloud plan

IBM's cloud plans appear to be coming together after a year of acquiring technologies and building some of its own

Some analysts say IBM's plan to evolve from a hardware vendor to a provider of cloud services to large business represents a fundamental shift in strategy.

The cloud strategy moved into high gear over the past year with IBM's acquisitions of SoftLayer last June and Cloudant earlier this year, and its decision to give third parties access to its Watson supercomputer via the cloud.

The effort truly began to fall into place this week when IBM launched the BlueMix cloud platform, built on Pivotal's open source Cloud Foundry framework, at its Pulse user conference in Las Vegas. The company is first offering its software suite on the BlueMix platform.
