VFA contract brings MSP to new relationship

Phoenix Austec joined the WatchGuard Technologies partner network a year ago, and 12 months on, its decision to switch security vendors has paid off.

Last month, the Victoria-based managed services provider (MSP) was named WatchGuard’s highest growth partner in the vendor’s Australian and New Zealand (A/NZ) Elite 2013 sales incentive competition.

The win was a result of a contract with VFA Learning which marked Phoenix’s first interaction with the vendor. According to managing director, Amelia Buchanan, the WatchGuard component of the agreement was worth “upwards of $5000.”

“Once we took on [VFA Learning], we realised we had to support the WatchGuard brand, so at the time it was more a necessity, and we really didn’t know much about WatchGuard,” Buchanan said.

“Our staff had to do some training and it was through the training that they were opened up to what WatchGuard could do, and they were impressed. From that point we rolled it out.”

Before WatchGuard, Phoenix sold security appliance from Cisco Systems, a partnership which has since been terminated.

Buchanan told ARN that Phoenix decided to stick with one vendor as the WatchGuard product provides more functionality within one appliance, and translated to greater value for the client.

Internally, she said the services WatchGuard offers the MSP are more personalised, and that the “relationship is better” thus far, although notes that “obviously the size of company is very different.”

“From my point of view, I would hope that as WatchGuard grows, the service remains the same. That will be my measuring stick. As long as I’ve got that relationship and I can get what I need for my clients, that’s the bottom line.”

Phoenix currently sells both wireless and non-wireless XTM products from the 25 to 515 models.

Malwarebytes shoots the breeze with channel, prospects

A Kumeu, Auckland, winery was the venue for a Malwarebytes event for partner and prospect MSPs - with some straight shooting on the side. The half-day getaway, which featured an archery competition, lunch and wine-tasting aimed at bringing Malwarebytes' local New Zealand and top and prospective MSP partners together to celebrate recent local successes, and discuss the current state of malware in New Zealand. This was also a unique opportunity for local MSPs to learn about how they can get the most out of Malwarebytes' MSP program and offering, as more Kiwi businesses are targeted by malware.
