HealthLink to lauch e-referral service for GPs

The system will be fully rolled out throughout Auckland and Northland before commencing national rollout in early 2014.

HealthLink will launch its new CareSelect eReferral service in Auckland and Northland this month. The CareSelect service enables general practices to identify a suitable medical specialist for any referral and then send a referral to them within a few seconds.

HealthLink ceo Tom Bowden says transferring patients from one care provider to another is one of the most important steps in day to day healthcare provision. “Most of New Zealand’s public hospitals now accept electronic referrals and they are quickly becoming the sector’s preferred method of transferring patients’ care amongst providers,” he says.

“CareSelect enables general practitioners to make better informed referral choices and provide better quality information to accompany their referrals. It enables the GP to find the most suitable specialist to refer their patient to, based on the specialist’s interests, skills, availability and other criteria. Once the specialist is selected, CareSelect assists the GP to create a high-quality specialist referral and send it securely.”

CareSelect uses the same HealthLink forms and technology as is used to send electronic referrals across most of New Zealand’s District Health Boards.

The service has been developed with HealthLink partner organisation Caseweaver. It incorporates Caseweaver’s search engine and decision-support capabilities.

Bowden says the CareSelect service has been trialled in Northland for the past six weeks where more than 500 eReferrals have been sent. The system will be fully rolled out throughout Auckland and Northland before commencing national rollout in early 2014.

HealthLink provides electronic communications services to 10,000 medical organisations across Australia and New Zealand
