Security in the Cloud remains a priority for businesses: AWS

Cloud provider finds that its enterprise and public sector customers are helping to shape its Cloud platform

The first question a company, big or small, will ask a Cloud provider is about security, according to AWS SVP, Andy Jassy.

Jassy made the observation at AWS’ Re:Invent 2013 event in Las Vegas, where he agreed that it should be a business' key focus.

“If you have customer data that matters, their number one priority is to ensure it is secure,” he said.

As a platform holder, Jassy said it is a priority for AWS as well.

“We tell customers we all have the same strategies that security companies have been using in their space for the last 30 years,” he said.

In addition to physical security at datacentres, Jassy said the provider works extensively on ensuring its network is not compromised in any way.

Users are also provided with software controls over who can access the resources, as well as with the ability to specify which users, functions and services can be accessed.

Since AWS has a large number of enterprise and public customers who are sensitive about security, Jassy said the security features of AWS’ platform are also evolving.

“The more customers that end up on the AWS platform, the more input we get on features and security capabilities,” he said.

“In return, everyone else gets to automatically enjoy those benefits for free by just being on the same platform.”

Partners in the system

Jassy attributed the growth of AWS’ platform worldwide to the vendor’s “large and vibrant” partner eco-system that is helping customers "build on top of AWS."

“We always believed from the start of AWS that a vibrant eco-system was going to be strategic,” he said.

Jassy explains that customers typically want help in figuring out how to move to the Cloud.

“They also want to run the same software they’ve been use to, but just only our Cloud infrastructure platform,” he said.

System integrators numbering in the “thousands” are currently helping companies move data to AWS.
