Space Grey iPad 5 shown in new photos

New high-res photos of the back casing of Apple's next iPad have been leaked online ahead of 22 October launch event

With less than two weeks until Apple's next special event is expected to take place, photographs of what appears to be the casing of the iPad 5 have appeared online, showing a new Space Grey option for the tablet.

It's believed that Apple will send out invitations next week for a 22 October special event, which is likely to play host to the unveiling of the fifth-generation iPad and the second-generation iPad mini, dubbed iPad mini 2.

In the lead up to the event, we've seen numerous leaks suggesting that the iPad 5 will be thinner and lighter, taking design cues from its smaller sibling, the iPad mini.

The new photographs, published by Sonny Dickson on Wednesday, show a close-up look at what could be the iPad 5's casing and front panel, both in a White/Silver option already available for current iPad models, as well as a new Black/Space Grey option, which is expected following the launch of a Space Grey iPhone 5s and Space Grey iPods last month.

In addition to the new design, it's rumoured that the iPad 5 will include the iPhone 5s's Touch ID fingerprint sensor, and could also have the same A7 chip. The camera is likely to get an upgrade, too. To find out more about what to expect from the iPad 5 read our iPad 5 rumour round-up.

Apple's 22 October event could also shed more light on OS X Mavericks, which was recently rolled out to developers in Gold Master, and also the new Mac Pro.
