Toshiba Portege Z30 ultrabook enables in-house upgrades, fixes

Memory can be added and battery can be replaced in Toshiba's 13.3-inch Portege Z30 ultrabook

Toshiba's new Portege Z30 ultrabook can be fixed or upgraded in-house, which the company hopes will set the new offering apart from competition.

The 13.3-inch Portege Z30 has a chassis that can be unscrewed to add more memory or replace worn-out batteries. That could extend the life of laptops and reduce support costs, said Duc Dang, senior manager of marketing and product development at Toshiba.

Integrated batteries in ultrabooks are typically hard to replace, and a fixed amount memory is fit directly on the motherboard. However, the Z30's internal battery is replaceable and the ultrabook has memory slots.

The laptop runs on Intel's latest low-power Core processors code-named Haswell. It is about 17.7 millimeters thick and weighs 1.1 kilograms. It supports up to 16GB of RAM, and 750GB of hard drive storage or 512GB of solid-state drive storage. It will come with a 1366 x 768 pixel resolution screen. The company could not provide an estimated battery life for the product.

The Z30 also has Gigabit Ethernet and the latest 802.11ac Wi-Fi wireless networking capabilities. Other features include HDMI, VGA and USB 3.0 ports.

The laptop will be priced at US$1,249 and become available worldwide on Oct. 18. The laptop can be configured with Windows 7 or Windows 8.1.

Toshiba also announced the 14-inch Tecra Z40 and the 15.6-inch Tecra Z50, which will start at $1,229 and become available worldwide later this month. The laptops are targeted at businesses and will come with Haswell processors, and also have an option of discrete graphics processors.

Toshiba also upgraded Portege Z10T hybrid with Intel's latest Haswell processor. The product is sold as a laptop with a keyboard dock and a detachable 11.6-inch screen that can function independently as a tablet. The battery life in the product is estimated by Toshiba at 6.5 hours. The screen displays images at a 1920 x 1080 pixel resolution. The company did not provide pricing for the product.
