Virtualisation and Cloud infrastructure company, VMware, has appointed Sanjay Mirchandani to lead its Asia-Pacific and Japan (APJ) business as senior vice-president and general manager.

Existing VMware APJ boss, Andrew Dutton, will remain at his post until October 14, at which point Mirchandani will take over. Dutton will then partner with Mirchandani for the rest of the year to ensure a smooth transaction of leadership, after which he plans to retire following a five-year stint at VMware and an IT career spanning more than 30 years.

In commenting on the appointment, VMware president and chief operating officer (COO), Carl Eschenbach, said “Mirchandani is taking over at an exciting stage of VMware’s progress in APJ, which is our fastest-growing geographical region.”

He also claims Mirchandani’s IT and business experience and APAC market knowledge will build on Dutton’s contribution to the company.

Before VMware, Mirchandani spent seven years with storage hardware vendor, EMC. He joined the company in 2006 as COO of the Global Centre of Excellence, and also picked up the position of chief information officer in 2008, holding both roles until early 2013. He was then appointed as global enterprise services executive vice-president.

Earlier in his career, Mirchandani worked for Microsoft as India managing director (1998 to 2001), South Asia president (2001 to 2002), and APAC president (2002 to 2004). He finished with the vendor in 2006 after two years as enterprise services regional vice-president.

VMware presently serves 55,000 customers in APJ. It has about 3700 employees in the region, and a network of around 10,000 partners. It recently reported $US1.24 billion in revenues for the second quarter of 2013, representing 11 per cent year-on-year growth.
