Orcon signs up with Hawaiki for international bandwidth capacity

The company will purchase 40GBps capacity the first year, and buy more in following years.

New Zealand ISP Orcon has confirmed its intention to acquire 40GBps of interntional bandwidth capacity on the New Zealand/Australia-US segments of Hawaiki Cable’s submarine cable system.

According to Orcon, the purchase of capacity in year one, which was fuelled by the need to meet the growing demands of NZ’s internet users, will be followed by relevant increases in future years.

“The country’s bandwidth requirements are more than doubling year-on-year, and with the growth of video services, and proliferation of devices, this growth rate could even increase.

“It’s imperative to New Zealand’s development that we have a second cable network. Competition leads to better prices, and we’ll be able to offer these in turn to our customers,” said Orcon CEO Greg McAlister.

Hawaiki’s 14,000km trans-Pacific cable, scheduled for completion in late 2015, will link New Zealand, Australia and Hawaii to the US west coast.
