Groundwork underway for $60m Gen-i datacentre construction

Facility to hold 1200 racks with focus on sustainability

Managed ICT services provider and Telecom NZ Group member, Gen-i, and infrastructure provider, Revera, have announced site preparation is underway for their $60 million enterprise-class datacentre.

With construction beginning later this month and completion expected in the second half of 2014, the Tier 3 greenfield facility will focus on sustainability, power usage effectiveness (PUE) and future flexibility.

The site will utilise modular POD construction with four 100-rack data halls in each. The facility has room for three PODs for an ultimate capacity of 1200 racks.

“This is a fantastic investment for Gen-i and Revera, and more importantly, for our clients,” Gen-i CEO, Tim Miles, said. “The new Auckland facility will further increase our capability to deliver the datacentre and Cloud services our clients increasingly need and want.”

According to a statement, the carrier-agnostic site is well located for power, and nearby Telecom's backbone network and other telecommunications providers, but will provide sufficient geographical separate from existing Telecom sites and other service providers.

The statement also said this $60m investment will be accounted for within the 2015 financial year capex envelope. Telecom has signed a development agreement with Retail Holdings, which has engaged Hawkins Construction and AECOM to design and build the datacentre.

In addition to their recently opened $10.5m Christchurch datacentre, planned expansion of Revera’s Wellington datacentre, and a $2m expansion to their Dunedin site, the Takanini structure will be an important growth addition to Gen-i and Revera’s combined fleet of 20 datacentres nationwide.
