Suna Traffic Channel adds Hamilton and Tauranga coverage

Extends coverage of traffic information to 91 per cent of NZ metropolitan

The Suna Traffic Channel has expanded its New Zealand coverage to include Hamilton and Tauranga, now covering 91 per cent of the main metropolitan population, alongside Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.

The service is live on compatible GPS devices, including in-dash navigation systems, automotive manufacturer navigation systems, portable navigation devices (PNDs) and certain smartphones, as well as in-car satellite navigation systems, transmitting information on traffic incidents and road conditions to motorists in real-time.

According to a statement, this is possible due to real-time analysis of data collected from “thousands of probe vehicles equipped with GPS systems.”

Suna monitors approximately 1500 kilometres of road in Hamilton and Tauranga, and uses “a range of automated and other data sources” to gather up-to-date information on road incidents such as accidents, traffic congestion, road closures, major road works and special events.

In addition, Suna, operated by Intelematics, combines information from The Radio Network’s Time Saver Traffic service, the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) and other sources such as emergency services and local government.

Based on the international standard Traffic Message Channel (TMC), the service is provided as an Radio Data System (RDS), FM broadcast, as used by a majority of navigation systems, or as an Extensible Markup Language (XML) feed for use with web, mobile and other applications.

“Motorists in Hamilton and Tauranga will now receive up-to-date traffic information, helping them to steer clear of any unexpected delays while out on the road,” Intelematics chief executive officer, Adam Game, said.

“Since launching in New Zealand last year we have extended our partner base and enhanced the service to give motorists a better driving experience when travelling in New Zealand’s most congested cities.”
