SAP co-founder Plattner to teach online course on in-memory computing

The six-week course is open to all, with no prerequisites

People interested in learning about in-memory database technology will be able to so later thing month under the virtual tutelage of SAP chairman and co-founder Hasso Plattner.

Platter will teach a six-week online course through OpenHPI, the web-based learning platform of his Institute for Software Systems Engineering, the organization announced Friday.

"[The] latest hardware and software trends led to the development of a new revolutionary technology that enables flexible and lightning-fast analysis of massive amounts of enterprise data," according to the course description. "Unbelievable things are possible and you will understand why this is true using an in-memory column-oriented database instead of a traditional row-oriented disk-based one."

While OpenHPI's announcement didn't mention it by name, the course description clearly alludes to HANA, SAP's commercial in-memory database platform that now lies at the core of its product development efforts.

SAP also announced a series of free online training courses for HANA and other technologies through its OpenSAP web portal earlier this year.

There is no charge for Plattner's course, which will be conducted in English, nor are there requirements for entry.

Those who have experienced Plattner's exhaustive keynotes at SAP trade shows will not be surprised by the depth of the online program.

It will feature more than 30 instructional videos, "comprehensive reading material for an intensive study of the subject, online tests to self-check learning progress, homework and an online final exam," according to a statement.

Successful participants will be awarded a certificate with Plattner's signature.
