Nokia launches Lumia 925, NZ release TBA

Smartphone vendor releases its high-end Windows Phone in Australia

Nokia has launched its flagship Windows Phone, Lumia 925, in the Australian market, making it available at major retailers and networks such as Optus and Telstra.

Key features of the smartphone include a PureView 8.7 MP camera with Carl Zeiss optics, 4.5” 1280x768 AMOLED display with Gorilla 2 glass, 1GB RAM, 16 GB internal memory and 4G network compatibility.

While the Australian launch details have been finalised, Nokia Australia’s managing director, Steve Lewis, did not have pricing or availability for the New Zealand market.

According to Lewis, New Zealand is a separate market for the vendor with different channel and network operator partners.

“We’re currently working with those partners for the availability of the device there,” he said.

Lumia 625 update

In addition to unveiling the Lumia 925, Nokia used the opportunity to announced the upcoming release of the Lumia 625.

The Lumia 625 is being positioned as a low-cost option that comes with a larger 4.7” screen and 4G connectivity.

The cheaper Windows Phone will be available on August 24 in Australia, while New Zealand pricing and availability has yet to be formally announced.

As for how Nokia is faring in the smartphone market, Lewis said Lumia sales have been increasing by 32 per cent quarter on quarter, with strong growth reported globally by the vendor in Q2.

Lewis said the growth of the Lumia range is made possible by the ongoing support of local channel partners and network operators.

“Part of that success is driven by a broad and wide portfolio,” he said.

“We have designed a wide range of Lumia products to address different consumer needs, starting with the entry level model Lumia 520 to the new flagship 925."

Lewis said Nokia has designed each Lumia model to be unique, offering features designed to target a specific market at a particular price point.

“With the Lumia 925, it is the high quality lens for better photos,” he said.

Software services such as Nokia Music and Here.com mapping, as well as the Microsoft Office suite, are available across the Lumia range.
