Aussie firm offers SOHO market good backup

AUSTRALIAN company DYO Services is hunting for local firms to sell its online backup software, aimed at the one million or more small and home-based businesses in New Zealand.

Customers pay a minimum of $10 a month for six months and receive 100MB of back-up storage and the ability to retrieve files, which are housed at a Hitachi Data Systems data centre in Melbourne. Set-up costs — including the software installation CD — and internet charges are additional.

The DYO package is almost identical to Thedatabunker, which New Zealand firm Hosting and Datacentre Services sells via Iconz and Dynalink for nearly $20 a month.

The two products use software from Perth company Info-In.Com.

DYO director Carmelo San Gil says even though customers back up their files and manage their accounts online, the company believes the product is best promoted via resellers. They receive 25% margin on the software and can charge installation fees.

DYOBackup’s foray into web marketing suited its March launch and “early adopters” but most customers prefer to “trust” the person or company that maintains their PC or small network, San Gil says.

“If we can build a network, charge less money [than competitors] and share it around, God willing we can make a decent income out of it as well.”

DYO has a target of up to eight distributors and 200 resellers in New Zealand. In Australia, there are 11 distributors, under which DYO is building a reseller base.

San Gil and fellow director Col Poulter promoted their product in Auckland at the end of May as part of a New South Wales trade mission.
