Rutherford joins Cisco as channel manager

FORMER general manager of Hewlett-Packard New Zealand’s imaging and print group, Jennifer Rutherford, has joined Cisco as its new channel manager for New Zealand this week.

Rutherford left HP in July and replaces Suzanne Hansen who now heads Cisco’s Australian channel.

At the time of her departure from the hardware vendor Rutherford said that she would return to an IT role within months and would be taking a well-deserved break to spend with her family in the meantime.

Cisco said at the end of August that Hansen would cross the Tasman, but did not announce a replacement.

Rutherford is looking forward to her new role, saying she is excited to work with a new set of technology.

“There is a lot of growth in the routers, network security and storage markets, and it will make a good change from servicing PCs and notebooks. The Cisco products require more technical knowledge and there is not so much commoditisation of the market,” she says.

Rutherford says she is impressed with Cisco’s channel programme, SimplyCisco, and will review if the vendor has the right channel and distribution strategy in the country.

“My first priority will be to understand Cisco’s programme and partners,” she says.

“I will also spend a lot of time with our Gold partners and see how we can work better together.”

Rutherford will work closely with Hansen, who joined Cisco New Zealand in 1999 and was channel manager since 2001, and will take over the duties from Cisco’s Wellington-based channel account manager Ingrid Schwens while she is on maternity leave.

Rutherford, who joined HP following the Compaq merger and led the imaging and print team for four years, surprised many in the industry when she left HP, but says her main reason for leaving was that her role involved too much travelling.
