HdS opens in Brisbane

Hosting and Datacentre Services (HdS) has opened a Brisbane office to showcase New Zealand software applications and offer storage and datacentre services.

The company is now a Hitachi reseller in Australia.

Chief executive Roger Cockayne says there are more opportunities to be had in Australia, pointing out that it’s a richer country, with the chance to increase business by as much as ten times in volume.

“If I’m doing $20 million in New Zealand I see no reason why I can’t achieve $200 million in Australia. We’re using Adelaide and Brisbane as a starting point because they’re similar in size to Auckland, where we’ve done very well,” says Cockayne.

HdS's Brisbane office opened a year ago but Cockayne says it had been treading water until last week when approval for the venture was officially signed off by the board. The office is run by two New Zealand managers and contractors hired to cover consultancy services.

“Now we can take our culture and message to Brisbane and show the Australians how to do business. We’re basically reselling New Zealand products into that market.”

HdS began in 1999 before purchasing Hitachi Data Systems’ stake in 2003, to hold a 51% majority. Hitachi Data Systems maintains a stake of 49% and its products back the company. In 2003 HdS launched Business Fabric, a hosting programme to give local software companies a profile in international markets.

Cockayne says these companies and other HdS clients will benefit from Australian exposure.

“Several of our New Zealand clients were asking us to make the move to Australia anyway. On top of that we already host several Australian clients in Auckland so we’ll move them back over the Tasman as well.”

These clients include Torque and Multiplex, hosted from linked data centres in Albany and Tawa near Wellington.

HdS provide datacentre services to the Tower Group in New Zealand.
