Lan 1 acquires Zasco and PowerDsine

LAN 1 has added two products to its line up that it says strengthens its specialist networking distributor status.

The company began representing PowerDsine - the power over ethernet equipment provider, and authentication vendor Vasco in New Zealand this month.

Liam Venter, Lan 1 general manager, says the two products are in line with the company’s aim to be a one-stop network equipment supplier.

“Other distributors do not focus solely on networking - all our resellers are network integrators,” he says.

The PowerDsine range provides power through ethernet cabling for wireless access points, VoIP (voice over internet protocol) phones and surveillance over IP cameras and is included as original equipment by many manufacturers of these products, says Venter.

“By importing PowerDsine equipment directly from the original manufacturer we can provide the latest models to resellers at a lower cost,” he says. The equipment offers a less expensive option than running power to all these components separately, Venter adds.

Vasco meanwhile produces authentication devices that add an additional layer of protection to virtual private networks (VPN) by generating random numerical authentication codes that must be identified by an organisation’s server before a remote user can log onto the network.

David Drake, Lan 1 security product manager, says the devices provide a multi-layered approach to authenticating remote users on VPNs.

While there are numerous ways in which unauthorised individuals could obtain a user’s username and password and gain access to a VPN, with the Vasco system only users that provide an authentication code from the device will be allowed onto the network.

“It provides enhanced, multi-factor authentication. Ensuring a network is fully protected is about what you know: your username and password, and what you have: the authentication code,” says Drake.

Vasco is ranked second after RSA Security in the authentication technology market, but has cost advantages over its rival, which makes it more suitable for the New Zealand market, says Drake

Lan 1 will be promoting the range to organisations such as banks and government agencies that operate in highly security-conscious environments.

Drake says the technology is particularly suited to secure sockets layer (SSL) VPNs.
