Novell SuSE Linux desktop now available

NOVELL has released its Linux desktop opera-ting system for enterprise customers.

Novell Linux Desktop 9 is the next edition of the desktop offering by SuSE Linux, which Novell acquired last year and is built on the same software as SuSE Linux Enterprise Server 9.

According to Novell, its Linux desktop provides an end-user desktop platform designed specifically to help businesses leverage Linux and open source software with confidence, as it is backed by the vendor’s support, training and consulting services.

The company is not touting the system as a wholesale replacement of Windows, but rather as an alternative for where deploying an open source desktop is sensible and cost-effective.

“In our view, the time is now for specific desktop users to reap the benefits of open source,” Jack Messman, Novell chairman and CEO, says.

However, David Lenz, sales and marke-ting director of Australia and New Zealand, does not rule out general replacement of Windows and other proprietary operating systems with Novell Linux Desktop, saying it enables companies to implement a full end-to-end Linux system.

Linux Desktop 9 is shipped with an end-user operating system, office applications and productivity tools, which Lenz says gives customers savings as they do not need to buy an operating system licence and then pay extra for office applications.

The system is expected to retail at around $70 and includes the Novell Edition of OpenOffice.org, providing a word processor, spreadsheet and presentation suite; Mozilla Firefox web browser and the Evolution collaboration client that integrates email, calendar, contact management and task lists.

Integration with Novell ZENworks Linux Management allows administrators to deploy, configure and manage Linux desktops from a central location.
