NZ ICT group established

KEY industry players have joined forces to establish ICT New Zealand, with the goal of creating an international buyer portal.

With representatives from groups such as ITANZ, NZ Computer Society, NZ Wireless Forum, Canterbury ICT Cluster and Internet NZ, the organisation plans to develop a local ICT brand.

ICT NZ chairman Malcolm Fraser says the members signed a charter last August and the organisation was formalised in November.

“It all started with conversations with the various groups and then we all wound up in the same room at the same time talking about the same problem,” he says.

Fraser says the main problem with the local industry is the lack of a brand that works offshore.

“New Zealand isn’t a software factory, unlike some other countries, so we have to pick off the parts of the market — both vertical and horizontal — that are really interesting to overseas buyers.”

Made up of volunteers and with no govern-ment funding so far, the organisation has three working groups in progress looking at member strategy, creating an ICT directory and the effectiveness of clusters and collaboration, says Fraser.

The group will work closely with the HiGrowth Project, established by the government to help grow the New Zealand ICT sector.

HiGrowth Project executive director Lester Singer says the group will bring together all the disparate organisations around the country.

“It’s still very new but we’re very supportive of it,” he says.

Singer says there is a need for the ICT industry to have a strong, united voice and will work with the organisation to take projects to government level.
