Datastor Forum to focus on technology

REGISTRATION for Datastor’s annual marketing event, Forum, is now open and sales manager Dave Rosenberg is urging resellers from around the country to participate.

“This is the only thing of its kind in New Zealand. Datastor is direct marketing to resellers and we are encouraging them to bring their customers as well,” he says.

Rosenberg says the emphasis will be on technology and solutions rather than products and adds that attendees will have plenty of opportunities to meet and mingle with vendors such as EMC, Brocade and Cisco.

“It’s all going to be held in the one area — including lunch, morning and afternoon tea — where the vendors are. And what would a channel event be without a cocktail party at the end of the day?”

He expects around ten vendors to participate, preferring to keep it to a select few and do it well.

“At this stage it’s first in first served.”

The message this year is secure, comply and manage, which Rosenberg says is reflective of the evolution of storage.

Naturally, compliance is a key theme and Rosenberg says many companies still fail to comprehend its importance.

“Yes, Sarbanes-Oxley is a driver; it is for anyone dealing with the US, including Datastor. But compliance is about more than Enron-type situations and that’s the message I want to take to people.”

Seminars will also be a feature of the one-day event, held in Auckland on October 18 and Wellington on October 20, with two streams: business architecture and business orientation.

Rosenberg also hopes to have a separate stream for whitebox manufacturers but at this stage that hasn’t been confirmed.

While Forum is one of the highlights of Datastor’s calendar, Rosenberg says his company is steaming ahead at a fast pace, despite the upheaval of the ongoing acquisitions, mergers and consolidation in the industry.

“There’s going to be a lot more consolidation and as a result Datastor will end up with fewer vendors on its books. Storage is so commoditised now and we’ve had to change with that.

“These days if you’re an international company with money in the bank you’ve either got to buy or be bought.”

He notes that while he’s noticed further convergence between security and storage products, many vendors still recognise the need for specialisation.
