Sonicwall secures top market position

IT has been a busy month for Sonicwall. The security vendor has been named the leader of the global unified threat management (UTM) security appliance market for the second quarter in a row by research firm IDC in its Worldwide Quarterly Security Appliance Tracker.

In addition the company has launched three new products, which include the new TotalSecure firewall offering, the PRO 4100 firewall and its first SSL-VPN appliance for small to medium-sized businesses, which is released today.

Sonicwall says TotalSecure is a cost-effective hardware and software package that allows SMBs to increase internet security and manage risk, productivity and bandwidth usage from a single platform.

It includes a hardware firewall, one-year subscription to Sonicwall’s Gateway antivirus, antispyware, intrusion prevention and content filtering services, and is available in five options based on the company’s TZ 150, TZ 170 and PRO 2040 firewall appliances.

The PRO 4100 is an extension of Sonicwall’s PRO Series appliance range and is a ten-port, all-gigabit UTM firewall that Sonicwall claims delivers high-speed internal and external network protection.

The PRO 4100 incorporates multiple advanced networking, security and configuration features, which Sonicwall says reduce complexity and management overheads for corporate central sites, distributed environments and data centres.

Meanwhile, Sonicwall says the SSL VPN 2000 is the first in a new series of appliances that make remote access affordable and easy for SMBs.

Sonicwall says the product integrates seamlessly with third-party firewalls, but claims it delivers enhanced UTM protection when deployed with its UTM-enabled PRO or TZ series firewalls.

According to Tim Dickinson, Sonicwall country manager for Australia and New Zealand, SSL-VPN (secure sockets layer-virtual private network) is the perfect remote access option for SMBs, as it is less complicated to use and administer than IPSec-VPN (internet protocol security VPN).

He says making this technology available at an affordable price for SMBs creates opportunities for Sonicwall’s resellers and managed security service providers. The SSL-VPN 2000 is priced at $3,995 ex GST. The PRO 4100 is priced at $11,990, while pricing for the Total-Secure offering ranges from $955 to $7,995.
