Renaissance wants bigger bite of accessory pie

Renaissance’s Apple division may soon add more third-party iPod and Mac accessories to its product line-up.

Apple division general manager Steve Ford says the distributor made contact with several makers of accessories for Apple’s iPod digital media players and Mac computers at last month’s Macworld conference in San Francisco with a view to representing some of the brands here.

“We went to see what is available and what is suitable to add to our line-up to grow the Apple brand in New Zealand,” says Ford.

There are over a thousand iPod accessories, many of which are not available here, says Ford.

Most of the main iPod accessory makers already have local representation, but Ford says Renaissance plans to look for potential gaps in the market.

However, he says this is a work in progress and no new deals are imminent.

Renaissance’s Apple division already stocks some third-party products, including Apple accessories by Bose, for which it has sole rights to distribute into the Apple channel.

It also has deals in place with other distributors to sell items through the local Apple online store.

Another distributor who came home from Macworld with bags full of new goodies to sell is MacSense.

The company is the main local distributor of the Griffin range of iPod accessories and director Bruce Currin says there are plenty of exciting new products in the pipeline.

“The coolest thing at MacWorld from Griffin was the TuneCentre,” he says.

The TuneCentre attaches to a television and stereo for viewing photos, watching video, listening to music or internet radio, and comes with a remote control.

Other new Griffin products include TuneFlex, an iPod car charger and flexible docking cradle; iTrip Auto, an FM transmitter and car charger for the iPod; and an iTrip FM transmitter for the iPod Nano.

Local pricing for these product are not yet available, says Currin.

“Apart from that we have some awesome new cases from iSkin and Contour Design, and replacement batteries from Sonnet,” he says.
