VMware in hot demand

When it comes to virtualisation there’s one name on everyone’s lips at the moment — VMware.

The company has formed OEM alliances with big-name global hardware manufacturers including IBM, HP, Dell and Sun. Paul Harapin, ANZ managing director, says VMware is determined to work closely with the industry in a number of areas.

“VMware has opened its source code to a select community of hardware and software vendors to ensure all its products are interoperable. Additionally the company prides itself on being highly responsive,” he says.

Harapin points out VMware’s virtual file format is freely available and any company wishing to try virtualisation can download the beta version of its server.

Through its alliances VMware has numerous well-placed connections in the software world — both commercial and open source.

“Virtualisation is an enabling technology that solves a lot of the serious issues out there. It’s made up of a number of different components and VMware happens to be an important part of that ecosystem,” says Harapin.

Clearly partnering is paying off.

During the last season of Bizgo seminars Jason Baynham, IBM NZ’s X series sales specialist, was singing the praises of VMware.

He believes VMware is becoming the de facto standard in virtualisation, adding that IBM and Gen-i are probably the best suppliers of VMware in the country.

Whether through OEM partnerships or its reseller, Harapin says VMware has a 100% channel model.

There are now over 200 Australasian partners and the company established a direct presence in New Zealand nine months ago.

Since appointing a country manager Harapin says he’s been receiving a lot of positive feedback from resellers.

“I believe VMware’s approach to partnering can only benefit end-users. Our partners all focus on different parts of the market, from very small through to large enterprises.”

On the distribution front VMware operates exclusively through Datastor. Dave Rosenberg, Datastor sales and marketing manager, says VMware’s success comes through having the right product at the right time and running a strong partner programme.

“No one can touch how far ahead VMware is in the market — it’s light years ahead of the competition,” he says.

Rosenberg says Datastor is soon to be awarded VMware value-added-consultant status. “It’s great news for us and means we can provide another resource our resellers can call on.”
