McAfee has high hopes for its latest security offering which goes on sale later this month, but Asia-Pacific marketing director Allan Bell says the package is likely to go down particularly well in New Zealand.
That’s partly because the product has been specifically designed to address the needs of small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) — which is a far larger proportion of the market in this country than elsewhere.
Bell says the company’s McAfee Total Protection bundle will also be popular with resellers, as it allows them to monitor security on behalf of SMEs.
“SMBs typically lack the skills to manage their own IT security,” he says. “The reseller is the IT department for these businesses. They go into the small business and fix things. The customer already trusts that reseller — to have them look after security is a logical step.”
Bell says while this approach will work well in countries like Australia, New Zealand’s resellers have always been much closer to their customers and will be better placed to make Total Protection work.
And there’s another advantage. “In New Zealand we see a lot more branch offices, which means there are a lot of security issues around remotely operated machines,” he says.
McAfee Total Protection replaces McAfee Managed VirusScan plus AntiSpyware. McAfee Total Protection for Small Business provides desktop and server antivirus, desktop antispyware and desktop firewall. The Advanced version includes mail-server filtering and ‘spam in the cloud’ filtering where mail is monitored before hitting mail servers.
All solutions are managed through a web-based management console.
By being able to manage the security remotely, resellers can take charge without needing to be on premises. And by adding updates and patches, resellers can also generate additional billing, Bell says.
The enterprise version of McAfee Total Protection provides antivirus, antispyware, desktop firewall, host intrusion prevention, scanning for mail servers and a gateway antivirus. The advanced version includes network access control.
Bell says the value for resellers of the enterprise product is in consultancy. With so many of the security product offerings being new technologies, resellers who invest in security skills can help customers deploy these enterprise offerings, he says.
