Following international debate and legislation, the new 802.11n wi-fi standard is set to hit local shelves in a few weeks’ time.
One of the first companies to launch a family of products based around the new standard is Netgear.
James Caldwell, Netgear’s New Zealand regional manager, says the new products represent a significant jump in technology, especially when it comes to transfer speeds. The commonly used g standard has a maximum raw data rate of 54Mbit/s, while the new n standard is promising speeds of up to 300Mbit/s.
“Most businesses have been stuck with the g standard for a while and the new n standard represents a significant jump in speed. There has been a pent-up demand for this, especially with larger businesses.”
Caldwell says the standard has been in the works for some time. “It is a long time coming for this product; there has been much debate around the subject, particularly in the US.”
The new range of products will be more expensive, but Caldwell says it is unlikely that first-time consumers will pay the dividend. He says the demand is in larger businesses at the moment which are more willing to pay for the new technology. “Most of our customers and resellers are fairly knowledgeable on the subject, and the price hike should be justified with the technology change.”
802.11n will use multiple input multiple output (MIMO) range extension technology, creating constant near-peak throughputs, which makes it more attractive to bandwidth-intensive applications such as voice over IP and online gaming.
