Gen-i gains Mindshare

Gen-i has shot up the ranks to take out top spot in IDC’s annual Mindshare report.

Each year IDC surveys over 200 local companies, asking them to name which IT providers they used or intended to use, across nine computing categories.

Ranked fourth in 2005, Gen-i has beaten the likes of IBM and HP which drop back to second and third, respectively.

Meanwhile Computerland has disappeared from the top ten due to its integration into the Gen-i brand.

Prior to its acquisition by Telecom in 2004, Computerland had dominated the field.

In 2005 Unisys, Telecom and EDS had dropped off the top ten but all have reappeared and Eagle Technology makes its first entry into the top 20.

Jenna Griffin, IDC market analyst, points out the survey is subjective and is dependent on how a company is seen by the market and is not reflective of revenue.

Griffin adds that end-users look closely at vendor viability and are increasingly sensitive to market occurrences.

“It’s hard to gauge how vendors take the report. For those that care it may change some of the dynamics in the marketplace,” she says.
