Aussie retail giant eyes IT, New Zealand

One of Australia’s biggest home entertainment retail chains; JB Hi Fi, is planning to expand its operation into New Zealand, according to a report published earlier this week in the Australian Financial Review.

The move comes one month after the company announced plans to enter the IT retail market in direct competition with Harvey Norman and Dick Smith Electronics.

In the AFR report, company head Richard Uechtritz is quoted as saying he is currently scouting several locations and plans to open the company’s first New Zealand store somewhere in Auckland by this time next year.

Uechtritz’s plan is to open four or five stores in Auckland before expanding into other parts of the country.

JB Hi Fi is Australia’s largest DVD retailer. The company currently has 60 stores in Australia and is expected to open a further six this year with an additional 13 opening in 2007. The company’s Australian stores are mostly located in shopping malls.
