A passion for email is the key to Secure MX’s success so far, according to the company’s co-founder and platform architect, Thom Hooker.
The Auckland-based email management company is looking to expand its business into the Australian market, but is still building revenue and recognition in New Zealand.
“We are currently going through a second round of funding, and we are thinking of taking our business to the Australian market. We already have customers over there as well as in Spain,” says Hooker.
Hooker founded the company along with Jesse Bull, after working on Telecom’s Xtra email platform for years.
“We wanted to change our focus to the business market, because standards are a lot higher there than in the consumer space.”
Hooker says the managed email space is small at the moment, but expects the business to grow rapidly over the next few years.
“New Zealand is not ready for managed email yet, although this is a fast-growing trend we’re seeing worldwide. To my knowledge we are the only company that exclusively deals in email management in New Zealand at the moment. There are larger players, like Trend Micro and Gen-i, who delve in it but they have no datacentres here.”
Hooker says the company is staying true to email management and is not focusing as strongly on hosting.
“We are not diluting ourselves by adding services; we want to remain a specialist in the email management area.”
