HP keeping storage in the family for SMEs

Hewlett Packard (HP) has released a new standards-based family of storage, aimed at the growing small to medium enterprise (SME) market.

HP Storageworks marketing manager, Aaron Lamond, says the launch allows HP to address the SME segment.

“Our new All In One (AIO) storage is very exciting. We have such a large portfolio and we are able to consolidate technology to fit the SME segment.”

Lamond says HP had three important criteria’s for the new storage product in order for it to reach the SME market.

“It needs to be quite simple and automated, as most smaller businesses do not have the resources to run a complex system. The AIO also offers affordability; giving SME’s a large product at a small price. Lastly, it needed to be reliable and worry free.”

HP is bringing customers in to train on the new product early this month, , with leading speakers from the U.S coming over.

Justin Tye at HP’s distribution partner Exeed says customers should see real business benefits through the AIO range.

“It’s affordable for these businesses and simple to use, removing storage as an often complex and frustrating issue and letting business get on with what they do best.”

Lamond says the new range was triggered by iSCSI and fibre channel.

“iSCSI and fibre channel is still out of reach for smaller customers. Fibre channel is often better for larger organisations. This is what promted HP to come out with the AIO.”

“Traditionally, new technology will start in the enterprise market, where organisations can afford it,” says Lamond. “We can make this technology affordable and easy to manage, without losing its core competencies.”

The new storage system is primarily aimed at businesses with three to ten servers and limited IT resources. It will launch with expandable platforms starting at 1 terabyte for around $8000. The AIO runs Windows storage server 2003 R2.
