Mac's ShredIt X 'chews' hard disk space

On Tuesday Mireth Technology released ShredIt X 5.7, its file shredder and hard drive cleaner for Mac OS X. A free update for registered users, ShredIt X costs US$19.95.

ShredIt X deletes data from a hard drive so it can't be recovered. It erases files, folders and previously deleted data. It works with internal and external hard drives, network drives and CD-RWs. Advanced options include government standards compliance and a configurable overwrite pattern.

New in the 5.7 release is scheduled free space shredding. With that feature, ShredIt X will erase data in work files and other scratch files created by applications that are otherwise recognised as free space, but may not be deleted entirely.
