Mixed fortune with Christmas sales

Christmas retail spending proved generally positive for vendors selling at retail, with big ticket items performing strongly and some surprises in the printer market.

Dick Smith Electronics general manager Stu Meadows says products that usually sell strongly and are generally popular as gifts once again sold well over Christmas. These were items such as MP3 players including iPods, digital cameras, notebooks, LCD televisions and GPS navigation products.

“For us there were really some strong categories going into Christmas and they ramped up through that period,” Meadows says. “There weren’t too many surprises.”

He says a range of toys brought into stores for Christmas also sold well.

IDC analyst Tim Shepheard says quarter four sales threw up some unexpected results, with single-function inkjet product sales up nine percent in that period and inkjet multi-function sales down seven percent.

“Print vendors tend to stock retail channels in October in preparation for Christmas sales, thus creating a strong sales period for vendors in

October.

“Epson was the stand-out performer in terms of single and multi-function inkjet printers during the lead up to Christmas, largely due to an aggressive promotional campaign.”
