Toshiba Gigashot

Honing in on the growing hard disk drive-based camcorders, Toshiba is introducing the Gigashot to the local market. It aims to combine a high quality digital video camera and a digital still camera.

The Gigashot R series is available in 30GB or 60GB models, based on Toshiba’s own 1.8-inch hard disk drive. This enables the user to store up to 55 hours of video or 20 DVDs worth of content onto the camcorders hard drive. The hard drive also enables users to take digital still pictures while shooting video. It has a 10X optical zoom and a 2.5-inch LCD screen for previewing.

The camera features MPEG-2 video recording and an easy transfer of video onto DVD with a three-button ‘burn to DVD’ option. Both models offer an electronic image stabiliser to correct hand movement while filming. My favourite feature is the gravity sensor that protects recordings in the event that the camcorder falls to the ground from my clumsy hands.

RRP: 30GB model $1249, 60GB $1599

Distributor: Ingram Micro
