Nortel, IBM collaborate on multimedia telecom apps

Nortel will resell IBM blade servers as part of an agreement announced by the companies to collaborate on developing converged multimedia telecom applications.

The agreement builds on an existing partnership the two companies have for IMS applications.

Under this arrangement, Nortel and IBM say they will assist third party software vendors in developing and testing converged applications, establish joint innovation centers, and integrate each other's products. In addition, Nortel will include its VoIP and fixed mobile convergence applications in IBM carrier packages and integrate offerings with IBM's WebSphere software.

IBM and Nortel will use each of their current IMS developer and interoperability testing programs to enable telecom application providers and carriers to develop multimedia services such as presence capabilities, IP security/surveillance, child tracking, "find-your-buddy," video dating, and enterprise business applications with click-to-call capabilities.

Nortel intends to include IBM's Websphere Presence and Group List Enabler Software as part of its IMS portfolio to offer a pre-integrated IMS solution. Nortel plans to deliver IBM's standard-compliant IMS enablers on the IBM Bladecenter line, including the new Bladecenter HT.

Nortel said the arrangement with IBM will not impact its partnership with Neustar, which provides Nortel with IMS presence technology from last fall's Followap acquisition.

"While IBM is our primary partner for presence...Neustar will continue to be an important partner to Nortel," a spokeswoman said. "Nortel will continue to offer Neustar's presence technologies and messaging services to power our IMS portfolio."

IBM and Nortel will also open an IMS testing/innovation centre at Nortel's Richardson, Texas, campus. In addition, the companies will expand their efforts at the IBM Telecom Solutions Innovation Centre in Montpellier, France.
