D-Link DPH-540 wifi phone

Complete wireless coverage in New Zealand is still some way off, though this does not stop companies pushing products like D-Link’s new DPH-540 flip-style, wifi mobile phone.

Using 802.11g/b, the phone connects wirelessly to the internet and users can make calls using VoIP technology. Finding hotspots to connect to in this country can be difficult, unless you live in a major metropolitan city and take all your meals at Starbucks.

The phone itself has the usual bells and whistles. It has a colour LCM display that, according to the manufacturer, is able to “…display information such as the numbers you dial, address book entries and caller ID numbers.” As well, it features WPA-PSK wireless security.

RRP: $559

Distributors: Ingram Micro, Dove and Synnex
