IT service challengers seize advantage

Top integrator contenders Axon, Infinity, Fujitsu and TelstraClear have gained most ground in the table of top 10 ICT companies in New Zealand, while software giant Microsoft has dropped off the list.

Research firm IDC unveiled the results of an annual survey to determine the top-ranked ICT companies at its Directions conference in Auckland on Wednesday.

While there has been no change in the top five providers with Gen-i still leading the poll, there has been some movement lower down the ranks.

Among the best performers was Axon. It moved from tenth to sixth place, displacing Microsoft, which is now at number 14.

According to IDC services market analyst Jenna Griffin, Axon’s rise is due to aggressive marketing.

“Axon has spent a lot of money, time and effort on advertising, especially on recruitment, over the past year.”

TelstraClear meanwhile has moved to ninth position after not being ranked last year.

“TelstraClear has put a lot of activity into its IT services and has made a concerted effort to push these, as well as its telco business,” says Griffin.

Two noticeable company moves were Infinity, who went from ninth in 2006 to seventh this year, and Fujitsu, which has traded twelfth for tenth place.

Although the ranking of the top five providers, Gen-i, IBM, HP, Datacom and EDS, did not change this year, the gaps between them have diminished, says Griffin.

“The gap between IBM and Gen-i has reduced, and there is virtually no distance between IBM and HP. EDS has almost halved the difference between it and Datacom.”

The rankings were compiled based on weighted responses to a survey of 250 CIOs by IDC.
