Sony 'boots up' new compact laptops

Sony has launched two compact laptops -- the TZ Series, a new laptop following on from the TX Series, and the SZ5, an upgrade to the SZ Series.

The new TZ series notebook is designed to blend portability and performance with a minimalist casing and keyboard design. The laptops weighs just 1.19kg, and offers high durability as the base and lid is made from carbon fibre.

Each model comes equipped with the 11.1-inch X-black LCD screen featuring a colour accuracy of 72 percent -- plus power-saving LED illumination that helps extend battery life. An Instant On function that enables users to play DVDs and audio CDs anytime without booting into Windows, with a set of dedicated AV buttons, provide the necessary play control.

Powered by the latest Intel Core 2 Duo Ultra-Low Voltage CPU, the TZ has an enhanced battery life with hard disk options that go up to 100GB — the largest available for a notebook this size. An integrated DVD±R/RW RAM optical drive featuring Double Layer (DL) technology is also included for double the capacity.

Sony's G-Sensor Hard Disk protection is also included to prevent damage to the hard drive should you drop the machine.

SZ5 adds storage

The SZ5 is the new upgrade to the SZ series with the addition of a larger hard drive. The hard disk on the SZ5 starts at 120GB and goes right up to 200GB on models VGN-SZ5VWN/X and VGN-SZ5VN/X. As with previous models, the SZ5 series has a unique carbon fibre chassis.

Selected models are also available with an HSDPA Expresscard for a mobile wireless broadband connection of up to 3.6Mbps. Powered with Intel Core 2 Duo processors and backed by up to 2GB of memory, the SZ5 includes features such as the integrated Motion Eye webcam, fingerprint recognition, TPM security and hard disk drop detection.
