High-capacity hacker protection from McAfee

McAfee has launched its Intrushield 10 Gigabit Ethernet platform in New Zealand and is touting the move as the first and only intrusion prevention system (IPS) able to deliver performance of up to 10GB.

Simon Coles, business development manager at McAfee New Zealand, admits the 10GB platform is aimed at the high-end enterprise and carrier space but says the technology is something SME’s will have to think about today.

“A product like this will not always be suitable for SMEs now, but small and medium businesses catch up to what we call enterprise technology very quickly. IPS as a technology can fit into that market, because it can be used for more than just one thing.”

Coles says McAfee has ‘thought leadership’ in the industry with its IPS technology and that the market for this will be driven by continually increased compliance and international market opportunities.

“The compliance issue will not only have to be thought about, it will drive other parts of the business as well. Technologies like IPS drive that; doing business on an international scale means you will have to think about compliance and security.”

McAfee’s Sydney-based regional director for Australia and New Zealand, Gavin Struthers, says the company is managing risk and compliance and is able to leverage efficiency in business because of that.

“Security is no longer only about firewalls and antivirus, it is a much more complicated threat landscape out there today. There is the visibility of security, in some instances it needs to be transparent.”

Struthers also says there is an imminent need to move from being reactive to being proactive in the threat landscape.

“There are more threats now but at the same time there are less ‘outbreaks’. Trojans, root kits and other stealth products are now driven by a financial incentive, the same goes for spam. I think the market has perhaps become more complacent in the last five years, because of the drop in outbreaks there is some apathy there.”
