Virtualisation specialist Vmware is looking to provide a greener IT landscape with its products.
The managing director for Australia and New Zealand, Paul Harapin, says virtualisation is one of the most powerful tools in green IT and a greener business can mean more money in the bank.
“In most organisations, up to 50 percent of the power consumption comes from maintaining IT and a lot of that comes from servers. A two CPU server consumes about 3000KW per year and an additional 3800KW to cool it.”
According to a 2006 study on power consumption, led by Jonathan Koomey at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, the total power consumption in the US in 2005 was approximately 45 billion kWh, resulting in total utility bills amounting to US$2.7 billion.
Harapin says a company could spend a little extra one year and see immediate results the following year.
“Spending money to upgrade your IT systems can really help the bottom line. Add to that the fact that our applications can be up and running in five minutes, and have very little maintenance needs, and you have a very good business proposition.
“We’re in the midst of the next big thing here,” says Harapin. “There is a lot of scope in the emerging technologies.”
Analysts at IDC have estimated the worldwide need for power will rise another 40 percent by 2010.
