Trans-Tasman ITC's green eco-conscious

New Zealand slightly lags behind Australia in attitudes towards ecologically responsible business and IT practices, according to a survey by Sun Microsystems.

The study surveyed more than 1500 Sun customers across Australia and New Zealand, highlighting the energy and telecommunications sectors as early green adopters – with 83 and 73 percent of companies respectively underway with or considering environmentally responsible initiatives.

Jim Hassell, managing director at Sun Microsystems, ANZ, says it is becoming increasingly hard for business to avoid thinking about the environmental debate.

“It’s almost impossible to avoid the environmental debate today. Most interestingly, this research identifies what motivates businesses to implement environmental business practises and measures what has been done to date. And, more specifically for Sun, it uncovers what our customers need in order to help ‘green’ the IT department.”

Hassell says although the numbers could be better, the outlook for green IT is very positive.

“While it’s hugely encouraging that almost two-thirds of Australian organisations have existing eco plans across the business, it’s no surprise that green technology initiatives are lagging behind. For a large organisation, greening the IT department and datacentre can take up to 18 months. The fact that so many customers surveyed already have or will deploy eco technology within the next 12 months is extremely positive.”
